1. Choose a topic. It should not be too general or too specific. I CHOSE THE TURNING POINT OF WWI.
2. Find five sources. One of the sources should be a historical journal, what historians call a referred journal. If in doubt ask your professor. Use books and articles written by scholars. You may have more than five sources. Do not use more than one encyclopedia. Do not use more than one internet site.
3. Internet sources: Do not simple Google your topic. This is an exercise if finding appropriate historical sites. Addresses that end in .edu or .org should be appropriate. Use internet sources posted by universities, institutions of learning, museums, historical societies, ect. Do not under any circumstances use Wikipedia. Use Jstor or America, History & Life data bases. These sites ONLY have sources that are appropriate.
4.Document the paper by using Chicago Manual of Style. When you use Chicago then endnote or footnotes are both ok. Information about these styles is available from internet sites, the library, your books or any number of guides from the library or for purchase. When there are writing workshops conducted on campus I will make the announcement.
5. When in doubt then cite your source. Always cite direct quotes or specific information that is not general knowledge.
