Purpose: Over the course of the rest of the semester, you will complete a series of writing assignments that ask you to identify an issue of interest and pursue it by asking questions, conducting research, identifying different lines of argument, and then taking a position of your own in a culminating paper. The goal of the inquiry essay is to present this issue to your readers and pinpoint a guiding and critical question (or a series of logically related questions) that invested citizens and experts are asking about it and the responses they are formulating. Key to this project is the idea that you are not just inquiring for your own sake. Rather, you are using this assignment to encourage an audience of your choice to invest themselves in this issue and to explore it with you. That is, you need to make it clear that this issue has exigence. You should craft your essay with these goals in mind: (1) identify and explain to your audience the issue itself and argue for its exigence, (2) pose an insightful, complex, and open-ended question that guides your exploration of the topic and opens up a field of scholarly conversation, and (3) synthesize multiple perspectives (at least three) on and responses to the question to demonstrate how experts and stakeholders understand and engage this issue. The end result is not to complete the investigation or take a position within the issue; you should remain objective. Your purpose is to assert the importance of the issue, to identify the main questions that drive it, and display an array of perspectives and responses people craft to the question you’ve identified.
Audience: You may choose to write to readers who have never encountered the issue you’re engaging, or you may write to readers who have preconceived ideas about the issue under discussion. Whatever audience you choose, you want to think about how your inquiry addresses their understandings and concerns.
Writing the inquiry: I encourage you to initiate your work for this essay by reflecting on your personal experiences and interests and by identifying the issues that are most important to you. You will complement this personal investment, though, with scholarly research—research that will enable and support your work throughout the course assignment sequence. The more curious and open-minded you are to learn more about a topic that interests you the more meaningful your research will be for you and interested readers. For this assignment, you must engage with at least 4 sources, at least 2 of which must be peer-reviewed (the others can be credible popular or govt. sources), that spur your thinking on your topic and add perspective to your experience. You may use the sources provided in your annotated bibliography, but you are free to use alternative scholarly sources instead. Critically reading and examining these sources should help you to identify key questions to ask about your issue—questions that should stand at the center of your inquiry essay. Furthermore, you must put into conversation at least two distinctly different viewpoints toward your inquiry’s target question(s), demonstrating how stakeholders respond differently to the question(s) you are seeking answers to. When you submit your final draft of the inquiry essay, you will include a Works Cited page of your sources cited in MLA style.
