This week, we were introduced to the characters and setting of The Good Place as well as a lot of basic, but important, ethical philosophy. Plato introduces us to the notion that there is a universal idea of the ethical separate from the consequences of our actions. Aristotle tells us that there are virtues of ethical behavior we can strive to balance. Kant declares that there are ethical absolutes that we can use our reason to uncover and follow.
Now it’s your turn to dip your toes into the ethics pool. Using at least two of these three philosophers and the chapter from The Forking Trolley, I want you to write 500 words of your reaction to these 4 episodes and the dilemma that Eleanor, Jason, and Chidi find themselves in. What might Kant, Aristotle, or Plato say about the ethics of Eleanor/Jason hiding in plain sight by impersonating the person who was supposed to be in the good place? What about Chidi helping her? If there were no negative consequences (like raining garbage), would any of these philosophers let our protagonists off the hook?
This should be about 500 words and you must make direct references (5-7 total) to any of the course resources. This must include references to at least 2 of the 3 philosophers read.
