Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason (Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics) is a response to two seemingly irreconcilable historical events. On the one hand, advances in mathematics and the natural sciences in the 17th and 18th-centuries demonstrated that nature is determined by physical law; on the other, the political revolutions in America and France at the end of the 18th-century seemed to demonstrate the reality of freedom.
