In this essay, you’ll be expected to engage deeply with the text of Beowulf and with the other readings in this class. I’d like you to think critically about what the text itself is saying, and about cultural issues presented therein. While developing this essay, you should think about how the text, as a cultural product, informs how we view past cultures, and what the text can tell us about our present condition. Use citations from other readings we’ve done in this class to support your argument. You are welcome to use outside sources as well, but please clear it with me first. (I have already cleared it with professor to use a couple other outside sources.)
In a formal argumentative essay at least five (5) pages long, address the following prompt:
Blood-feuds and kinship are constantly in tension with one another throughout Beowulf. In your essay, describe some of the central feuds in the poem, and how the people (or monsters) involved behave. Try to determine what stance the poem takes on feuding. Is it positive or negative? What real-world parallels can you draw with Beowulf’s representation of kinship and feuding, either historically or in the present? What may have been going on during the Anglo-Saxon period that may have made them willing to take the expense of committing this poem to writing? Is there something about social cohesion and organization that may have been taking place?
