Once again you have a choice, this time of very different kinds of essays. One question calls on you to apply the thought of Hobbes to a hot button issue of today. The other requires you to compare the thought of Hobbes with that of Machiavelli on certain issues important to them both.
TOPIC ONE
Compare Machiavelli’s Prince at his fiercest and wiliest (i.e. the armed prophet of Chapter 6 or the combined lion and fox of Chapter 18, identified in Chapter 19 with Severus) with Hobbes’s Sovereign. What do they have in common, and how do they differ? You’ll want to consider their respective origins, their respective goals, and their respective relationships with their Peoples.
TOPIC TWO
You hear a lot today about “political correctness,” which Google defines (on the authority of Oxford Languages, the dictionary people) as “the avoidance, often considered as taken to extremes, of forms of expression or action that are perceived to exclude, marginalize, or insult groups of people who are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against.” For the purposes of this question you may work with this definition or any other, but be sure to make clear which definition you have adopted. We’re not soliciting your opinion on political correctness, however. You know us better than that. We’re soliciting Hobbes’s opinion on it. Relying on Leviathan 15.17-21, 18.9, 29.6-13, 30.6-14, and whatever other passages you think relevant, elaborate a Hobbesian view of the issue. Hobbes: politically correct before its time? Or a critic of political correctness before its time? Would a Hobbesian sovereign enforce political correctness, or would he agree with its current opponents that it is more harmful than helpful? Whichever view you argue, you must ground your case in Hobbes’s text, and you must anticipate possible objections grounded in his text.
If you choose topic one, you will need to use the Prince by Machiavelli.
