As mentioned in previous weeks, the mapping assignments are designed to expand your spatial knowledge and understanding of the processes and phenomena we are discussing. For this fourth assignment, you are focusing on the distribution of predicted sea level rise and it’s impact on our coastlines (a concept related to Climate Change
Actions
as discussed in the chapter/lecture during Week 16).
Currently we are in the midst of climate change; specifically a dramatic increase in our surface temperatures. This is resulting in a net decrease of not only of sea ice, but continental ice sheets & mountain glaciers as well. As you’ve learned, sea-level rise is one of the major concerns of this melting ice trend. How much will sea level rise at our current pace? Well, there are a few scenarios based on our carbon dioxide emissions: (1) sea-level at the course we are on now and (2) sea-level with extreme carbon cuts.

Here you will see the sea-level predictions of the two scenarios I previously mentioned – the image on the left is depicting the first scenario (sea-level rise at the course we are on now), which is a 4° C increase in global surface temperatures. The image on the right is depicting the second scenario (sea-level rise with extreme carbon cuts), which is a 2° C increase in global surface temperatures (you can click on the When Will This Happen link at the top, right corner to learn more about this). Note that with both scenarios, global surface temperatures will increase and sea level will rise. The default setting is New York City. In the maps you will see urban areas shown in white/gray. The blue represents ocean water. In the case of New York City, you can see many areas where sea-level rises above, and inundates, urban neighborhoods. Now, search for San Francisco (type [San Francisco] into the search bar at the top left and hit enter). You will need to zoom out to see the entire city (click the minus symbol in the top, center of the map until you can see all of San Francisco and Oakland).
For this assignment (in the form of short paragraphs),
Compare and contrast the sea-level of the two San Francisco maps. Note that there is not much of a difference specifically in San Francisco, but there are differences in Berkeley, Oakland, Alameda, and Hayward, so be sure to take a look at those cities and briefly summarize the differences you see between the two map scenarios. Take a screenshot or picture of the area/city/location you are looking at in your map so I can view it.
Next, search for any coastal city (other than New York City and San Francisco/the Bay Area) and describe the sea-level change for both scenarios for that city as well. Take a screenshot or picture of the area/city/location you are looking at in your map so I may view it.
Lastly, consider that about 40% of the world’s population lives within 100 kilometers of the coast. Discuss some of the ways in which we can reduce our carbon dioxide emissions – this can be on an individual-level and/or larger, governmental or global scale.
Your assignment must be a minimum of 250 words (excluding citations).
As with the other mapping assignments, any resources that are used (whether the readings/lectures or outside sources) must be cited in MLA format. If you are unfamiliar with MLA format, please see the Library Handouts page here

. If you are using general information from a source, then simply adding the citation at the end of your assignment in a “Works Cited” section is sufficient. If you are using a direct quote (i.e. copying and pasting any portion of the source directly), then you must use quotation makes and parenthetical citations in the text, as well as adding the citation to the end of your assignment (see pg. 2 of the “MLA Handout” style guide). Use quotations sparingly. Responses that are quote-after-quote do not demonstrate your knowledge or understanding and will be marked down. The general rule of thumb is to aim for 20% or less (I highly suggest keeping it around 10%) of direct quotes in any assignment.
When you are ready to submit your assignment, click on the “Submit Assignment” button. If you have typed them, you can submit them by (1) copying and pasting them into the text box, or (2) submit them as a file (such as a Word document or PDF). Please do not submit other files types, such as Pages, since these cannot always be read on my end. For the images/screenshots, you can include them in your file, or upload them separately. Please note that Canvas does not recognize TIFF images files, so make sure your images (if separate from your writing) are in PDF or JPEG format.
