Music

2A. Throughout the semester we’ve examined numerous works by artists and composers that demonstrated originality and creative energy. Perhaps these works were at first criticized by audiences, the press, and those in the artistic community because of their originality and unique personal perspective. Yet, these artists were eventually admired and celebrated for their lasting contributions to society. Inspired by a recent New York Times article by columnist David Brooks (see Course Materials on Blackboard), identify three artists and/or composers we studied during the semester who established their own creative monopolies rather than simply competing to surpass their fellow artists on the basis of their mastery of craft and technical superiority. Make sure to discuss specific examples of their works (art and music we studied in class) as evidence to support your assertions. Specifically, how did the work of these artists and composers go against the established trends and why were there works considered so shocking? Ultimately, what was it about these works that created lasting value for society? 2B. In the second part of your essay, identify at least one area of your own professional or personal life where you might be more of a creative monopolist – one who independently pursues his or her own path, rather than competing with others to achieve success. What are the risks associated with a creative, original pursuit such as this and ultimately what value might result from your efforts?
