Case-Study Written Assignment:
BIOLOGY 333 fulfills a UCORE requirement, and therefore requires a substantial, graded writing component. The case study not only satisfies this requirement, but also means that final grades are not based solely on exam scores. Please direct questions regarding your assignment to Sarah Boothman (sboothman@wsu.edu).
Overview
Medical case studies are in-depth analyses of a person’s health condition.
The purpose of this assignment is for you to assimilate objective medical information and utilize reference standards in response to an assigned case-study. You will be required to that analyze a specific nutrition-related health condition and provide your assessment and recommendations utilizing science-based standards, resources and peer-reviewed research. It is important to reference sources of information that support your assessment and recommendations.

Your assigned case study provides relevant background information that you must interpret to make a clinical assessment. This includes recommendations based on the person’s anthropometric, clinical, dietary, and lifestyle information relevant to the medical condition. Although you can start this assignment early, it is strongly suggested that you wait to complete your assignment until we have covered Section 4 (2/17-2/24; Dietary Assessment) in class. This information will assist you in writing your assessment.
There are 3 different case studies, each of which reflect a different medical condition. Select the case study that is of interest to you.

Assessment: Grading and Grading Rubric
Assessment: Grading Rubric (60 points total)
1. Writing (0-20 points)
Style Expectations:
· Writing is clear, concise and professional
The case study is written objectively and is appropriate to the topic and purpose. Writing is professional, words are well chosen, and the writer avoids jargon and slang.
Grammar, Spelling, Mechanics Expectations:
· Grammar, punctuation, and spelling are correct
· Logical progression of sentence and paragraph structure
The writer does not make mistakes in grammar (run-on sentences, fragment sentence, verb tense agreement, etc.), spelling, and uses appropriate format for abbreviations (words are written out before use of an abbreviation). The writer avoids excessive wordiness and does not use words repeatedly in a sentence (example: “I went to the store and at the store I bought milk” vs. “I went to the store and bought milk.”). Sentence structure should be clear, concise and professional.
Example: Compare the following sentences
Original sentence – Dementia overall is a board category that many other neurological impairing diseases fall under, for example Alzheimer’s is a common type of dementia that primarily is found in elderly’s.
This sentence is wordy, uses words incorrectly (board vs. broad), rambles, and uses punctuation incorrectly – possessive use of elderly’s.
Revised sentence – Dementia is a neurological impairment that primarily affects older adults. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which is characterized by a progressive decline in mental and cognitive abilities.
We utilize software that detects plagiarism. Not only does the software detect plagiarism, but it also identifies the original source and the percent of plagiarism. Any assignment identified with plagiarism will receive an automatic 25 point deduction.
