You may want your audience to change their current position, support a specific solution, or think about the issue in a new way. Whatever your goal is, you should have a clear rhetorical purpose in your letter and work to achieve that purpose through using rhetorical strategies that you think will effectively persuade your audience. Keep in mind that an open letter always has more than one audience: the specific person or group to whom you are addressing the letter, and a broader public audience who might also read the letter. This means that you will have to explain the issue you are writing about in enough detail for a general public audience to understand your position.
