Part 1) Purpose: Our final major assignment of the semester will give you the opportunity to apply the rhetorical strategies we have been studying as you work to persuade your own audience. You will also use the research you conducted for your annotated bibliography to take an informed position on an issue that you care about.
Task: You will write an “open” letter addressed to a particular recipient or audience that takes a stance on an issue that you care about and attempts to persuade the audience to adopt your position. You may want your audience to change their current position, support a specific solution, or think about the issue in a new way. Whatever your goal is, you should have a clear rhetorical purpose in your letter and work to achieve that purpose through using rhetorical strategies that you think will effectively persuade your audience. Keep in mind that an open letter always has more than one audience: the specific person or group to whom you are addressing the letter, and a broader public audience who might also read the letter. This means that you will have to explain the issue you are writing about in enough detail for a general public audience to understand your position.
Your success with this letter will rely on your ability to clearly explain the issue to your audience and take a clear stance, demonstrating an in-depth understanding of the issue. Support your argument with sound reasoning and convincing, relevant evidence. Be clear and consistent, and organize your letter logically.
A successful letter will:
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the issue
Present your own stance on the issue early in the letter (usually within the first paragraph); this functions as your thesis or controlling idea
Offer cohesive evidence in the body paragraphs from relevant, credible sources
Appeal to the recipient’s values and respond to possible objections using expressive, clear, and appropriate language
Implement a style and tone to best persuade the audience/recipient to adopt your position
While common sense or personal experience certainly can count as evidence here, you will also need to incorporate outside research, using the sources you researched for your annotated bibliography to build your case.
Since this argument is constructed in a letter format, MLA format is not required; HOWEVER, you still need to cite your sources in the text and give the author(s) credit. You may cite sources similar to how they are cited in newspaper or magazine articles by providing the name, credentials, and other relevant information (such as expertise, titles of publications, awards, etc.)
