The organizational report asks you select an organization of your choosing, but one that actively has a social media presence on Twitter. Using netlytic
(Links to an external site.)
(an online social media analysis tool for researchers), you will develop a search query that pulls in social media content generated by or about that organization. At the end of the search term, you will analyze the social media content you find and use class content to help you in this analysis. For example, you could look at the organization using systems approach or through a critical lens. Aside from the assignment, this experience should provide you with excellent experience collecting and analyzing social media data. This likely will look very good on a resume and as something to talk about with a potential employer during a job interview.
The proposal phase of this project asks you to identify an organization and provide an explanation as to why you are selecting this particular organization for this project. Next, you will need to identify which social media or social networking sites this organization actively uses. Lastly, you should develop a draft search query that you plan on using for your overall project.
Learning Objectives
Through the Organizational Report, you should be able to do the following:
Develop hands-on experience collecting and analyzing social media content.
Apply class content to social media content.
Create meaningful interpretations based on this analysis.
Develop and share your findings with the class through a presentation.
Sections
Below are the major sections of the proposal that you will need to include, as well as a description of the content that should be included in that section/questions to answer. I do recommend labeling each section and treating the proposal like a traditional paper:
Introduction
Organization-Identify the organization you have selected. Provide a rationale for why you are selecting this particular organization.
Social Media-Identify which social media or social networking sites this organization actively uses. Provide a general estimate of how many posts, tweets, etc. this organization creates per month.
Search Query-Develop the search terms you will use in your dataset. I highly recommend that you format this using the same terminology found on the Twitter Advanced Search document (a jpg of this can be found on our course Canvas page and at the end of this document).
Conclusion
Format
In general, you should treat this like a traditional paper. The paper should meet the following criteria in terms of format:
Typed and double-spaced throughout
One-inch margins on all sides
12 point Times New Roman font
~2-3 pages long, double-spaced
Clearly written, well organized, and free of grammar and spelling errors
Includes your name, paper title, and date
Avoids use of extra space/lines (i.e., starting the 1st paragraph halfway down the page)
