Nelson’s Bluets is a literary fragment, a creative experimental piece of writing that challenges the traditional narrative arc (setting, rising action, conflict, climax, falling action, resolution); therefore, it should not be read or analyzed the same way we are conditioned to read and unpack traditional linear texts.
As a reminder, the purpose of an outline is to create a strategic bullet point plan to prepare your launch into writing full sentences and body paragraphs for your rough draft. Since Bluets is non-traditional, they way you plan your essay should be purposefully fragmented as well.
SUBMIT a loose thesis (a working thesis). Use the format below:
Select one: Does the content control the structure (new form: partially leans on preexisting forms)? Or does the structure control the content (new genre: full experimental). Explore how Bluets queers (subverts/challenges) the traditional linear narrative arch to renegotiate the readership experience. Thesis must contain debatable argument; avoid summary; avoid obvious statements of facts; avoid book review; avoid book reflections.
SUBMIT a plans for 8-10 body paragraphs: 4-5 about theme and content VS. 4-5 about form and structure.
Each body paragraph must provide thesis support in a different way:
directly address 1-2 numbered propositions from Bluets. Tell me which ones: prop #; page #.
feature a secondary, tertiary, or your own research piece of work in metaphorical conversation with Bluets. Make sure your research sources have a list of References, Works Cited, and/or Bibliography page. If they do not cite their sources, then they are not credible. Avoid sources with no date and no author’s name listed.
for example: one body paragraph about Maria Popova’s article and Bluets’ numbered propositions about Goethe.
for example: another body paragraph about 1 song from Joni Mitchell’s Blue album and Bluets’ numbered propositions directly about the singer and the songs.
