Choose one of the poems or the lines/stanzas that we have not discussed in class. Write a 2-3 page paper in which you make an interesting hypothesis about what is going on in the poem and support your hypothesis using evidence. Successful papers will use close reading to explore not just what is said, but how it is said and why it matters to our reading of the poem.
This is the Poem
My poor Muse, alas! what ails you today? Your hollow eyes are full of nocturnal visions; I see in turn reflected on your face Horror and madness ,cold and taciturn. Have the green succubus, the rosy elf, Poured out for you love and fear from their urns? Has the hand of Nightmare, cruel and despotic, Plunged you to the bottom of some weird Minturnae? I would that your bosom, fragrant with health,
Were constantly the dwelling place of noble thoughts, And that your Christian blood would flowin rhythmic waves Like the measured sounds of ancient verse, Over which reign in turn the father of all songs, Phoebus, and the great Pan, lord of harvest.
–William Aggeler,1954
Intro Paragraph I wrote to help –
The poem “La Muse Malade” by Charles Baudlaire or “The Sick Muse”, translated in english, is one that gives off these certain dark vibes. While reading the poem, I noticed that Charles Baudelaire is a poet who uses imagery as one his main focuses. He gives off this image as if he was speaking to somebody with great concern, and as if they needed some help with their troubles. The person to whom he is speaking to seems to be sick or just doesn’t look like he is doing well at the moment. He does not use very much rhythm, based on William Aggeler english translation of the poem, but instead he does use some metaphors that stick to the reader throughout. Charles demonstrates his probable cause by personifying love and fear to which the person he is talking to doesn’t know which has come to him. I wonder what does he mean by it? Is it because he has fear that he seems to be “sick” and is “love” the cure for the sickness? I believe that if the love would overcome the fear that maybe the person who seems to be sick, would be cured from the problem at hand.
