Principle of Governing

What one to three principles of governing do you consider essential to good governing? Argue for one to three essential principles of good governing that you discovered from the authors we’ve read for this assignment.

As you build your essay’s argument, be sure to summarize ideas from the authors assigned, as well as bring in other evidence from outside sources. To support your argument, it’s a good idea to define “good,” “governing,” and “good governing.” It’s also a good idea to consider underlying assumptions about the definition of a human being (Does a human tend to the good, the bad, or a mix, when left alone, for example?) since those assumptions underlying decisions about principles needed in good governing.

In order to prepare for this assignment, you must draw out principles of governing from each of the authors you read. I strongly suggest you make a list of those principles as you read each of the sources.

Also, note any underlying assumptions about the purpose or tendencies of human beings that you can infer from these readings, as well as principles necessary to good governing. List out those assumptions too as you read the sources.

Also, list out what each author thinks the definitions of “good,” “governing,” and “good governing” are, as you read the sources.

Finally, as you read these authors, know that you are not reading their full theories and are only deducing a few ideas from the short amount of text we read by these authors. Hence, in Essay 2, you are not explaining their full theories (that would take years of study!) but only bringing out a few principles and assumptions, as brought out by our readings.

IMPORTANT: Your overall claim (thesis) will indicate one to three principles of governing you will argue for, and I will see that overall claim (thesis) at the end of your introduction (that is, as the last sentence of paragraph 1).

As you build your essay, bring in personal and/or researched reasoning and other researched evidence, and be sure to avoid fallacies.

Don’t forget that this paper is an argument, not an exploration or an explanation. You must try to convince your reader (me, essentially!) that the one to three principles of governing you’ve chosen really are essential to good governing.

Do not plagiarize. A plagiarized final draft will result in a 0 score. I may report the plagiarism to Dean of Student Services.

To develop your argument, use standard essay form. I should see an introductory paragraph; each body paragraph should be 1/2 – 3/4 page long with a focused and developed point that backs up your overall claim (thesis); there should be a concluding paragraph.

I should also see opposing sides, too – rebutted fully or partly conceded. Finally, I want to note again that this essay is argumentative, so your overall claim (thesis) will be a reasoned assertion that argues for the necessity of one to three principles of governing in order to create the good government.

Format: 12″ font, standard margins, MLA Style citations, including Works Cited list. At least 6 pages (this does not include the Works Cited list). Use at least 4 of the above sources and 1-3 other dependable sources – for a total of 5-7 sources.

As you can see from the format explanation above, you must use at least 4 sources from the above list. Since you can only argue for one to three principles, you will need to use at least one other source for either back up to a principle noted from another source or as an opposing side. So, as you read the sources, consider synthesizing back up support from authors and consider oppositional views too. It will be very helpful if you take good notes on these sources with Essay 2 prompt in mind!

And – notice too – you must use 1 or, at most, 3 other sources outside of those listed above. These extra sources will be quite useful as you argue your preferred principles for “good government.” Start looking for those other sources as soon as you can.
