Advanced Thermodynamics Fall 20/21 Project 1
Objective:
• The project is to improve student’s understanding in basic concept of Gas Power cycle, Rankine Cycle and Refrigeration cycle.
• To suggest a modification and an improvement of the thermal efficiency of the THREE cycles.
Instruction:
To choose one cycle from Gas Power cycles (ideal Otto cycle, ideal Diesel cycle
and ideal Brayton cycle) and to suggest a modification for improving the thermal
efficiency of the chosen cycle.
To suggest a modification for improving the thermal efficiency of an ideal Rankine cycle.
To choose one of cycle from Refrigeration cycles (ideal Refrigerator cycle and ideal heat pump cycle) and to suggest a modification for improving the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of the cycle.
The content of the report:
The report contains THREE cycles and all modifications of each cycle.
Each cycle should consist of
a. An idea for improving the thermal efficiency or COP. b. Advantages and Disadvantages of the proposed idea. c. Possibility and Restriction of implementing the idea.
For each cycle, the explanation of the modification should contain minimum 300 words and maximum ONE page of A4.
Maximum number of pages including cover page is 4 pages.
Limitation:
Do not methods mention below for your modification.
For Brayton cycle, DO NOT use these methods:
Increasing the turbine inlet temperature.
Increasing the efficiencies of turbomachinery components (turbine, compressor).
Adding modifications to basic cycle (intercooling, regeneration or recuperation and reheating).
For Rankine cycle, DO NOT use these methods:
Lowering condenser pressure.
Increasing temperature of superheat steam in boiler.
Increasing boiler pressure
Applying a Reheat Rankine cycle, an open-feed water and a closed
feed-water cycles.
Zero marks will be automatically assigned to the report that exceeds 20% of similarity for the third attempts.
