3. Include in each category (adaptive, market, and competitive) the rationales for these selected
alternatives as related to the previous analysis from paper #1.
First, introduce with two original sentences the overall project idea. Then, based on your previous analysis, continue the proposal development by exploring the potential directional, adaptive, market, and competitive strategies for the development of this new service. Submit a summary of your analyses for the service. (Relates to Text Chapters 5-6),
Suggested Approach: An organization describes its directional strategies or mission statement. The organization to accomplish this mission may be growing, or merging, or downsizing and eliminating services. Or it may decide to perfect the services it already provides, so that it is known as a leader in the industry. Each of these is very different type of directional strategy.
Adaptive strategies need to be consistent with the directional strategies. For example, perhaps part of the organization’s mission is to provide excellent orthopedic joint replacement. The external analysis indicates that there is a growing aging population and the organization decides it is going to expand the scope of its orthopedic services to capitalize on the changing demographics; theorganization is “adapting” to the environment. Expansion of scope is one of the adaptive strategies. The organization needs to decide which of the expansion of scope adaptive strategy alternatives would be most appropriate for the organization, its culture, and the patient population. Under expansion of scope, there are subcategories of expansion. The organization may choose to add additional procedures (related diversification), or use different technology (product development).
Different organizations, according to their unique situation, may select different alternatives. For example, given a particular scenario, an organization may decide to become a leader in the industry with the services it currently provides. This organization may focus on creating a division to improve the patient experience. Strategic planning is about making decisions based on an organization’s culture, trends, and the environment. The alternatives allow for flexibility and survival in case the market, demographics, technology, regulations, etc. change.
On pages 206 – 254, the process for making decisions about developing alternative strategies and rationales is explained. The decision-making process is not linear, see the top of page 211. Not all of the strategies are appropriate for your project. Use this 6-4 exhibit to help you see an overview of the potential strategies.
In this paper, develop your new service’s mission statement. Then, choose and describe one appropriate well-developed strategy from each category—adaptive, market entry, and competitive with rationales for why they were selected.
While you are exploring the mission and each category of strategies–the potential directional, adaptive, market and competitive strategies–be sure to organize your paper logically. Each section of your paper should address these subtopics one-by-one. In fact, you can order your paper using these categories as headings.
