On the very first line of your term paper (no blank lines at the top), write your name, first name first, last name last. Use the same name you have used on your tests.
On the second line, write the name of the assignment (Term paper).
On the third line, write the name of the course (HUM 3310/ENG 3340).
On the fourth line, write the title of your paper. Be creative!

The remainder of your paper is pretty much a standard college term paper of the sort you wrote in ENG 1302. There is one important exception. In this paper, you must declare yourself, as we say in French. If you are writing about Bigfoot, for example, you must at a minimum state whether or not such a creature exists. Then, of course, you must defend your position with reason and evidence, and you must refute the other side of the debate with same.

For example, a thesis statement of the sort “I will present both sides of the issue and you, the reader, must decide for yourself” is not appropriate for this class. The reader may very well have decided that already. It is the writer who must persuade. Your objective is to convince readers that they are either mistaken, or that their views are correct. As you write, remember the following principle: “If such-and-such a claim is true, then it is true whether I think so or not. The same goes if it is false.” Your task to tell the real, true story. Not as you see it, but as it is.

Some other requirements

A good rule of thumb is that you need at least five reliable sources to support your research.
You should use the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) to format your paper. You can find links here on our blog for more on the citation conventions of the CMS.
Use in-text citations. Do not use footnotes. Endnotes are fine, but in-text citations are preferable. For example, you may write something like this in your paper:

With respect to the so-called “grassy knoll” hypothesis, Bugliosi (2007, 496) points out that the vast majority of witnesses in Dealey Plaza claimed to have heard shots coming from the Texas Book Repository.

This in-text citation will point your reader to an entry in the bibliography that will look like this:

Bugliosi, Vincent. 2007. Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy. New York: Norton & Norton.

The first number in parentheses your in-text citation refers to the year of publication. The second refers to page number, if you need to include one. The bibliography at the end of your paper should be in alphabetical order by author’s last name.

Your term paper must be a minimum of 2,000 words. If it is less than that, then I won’t read it because it is not finished, and you will not receive credit.
The last sentence of your first paragraph is your thesis statement. This is where you declare, in unambiguous fashion, exactly what you intended to prove in your paper. Here is a good trick for writing your thesis statement. Add the words “In this paper, I will prove that..” to the beginning of the last sentence of your first paragraph. Read the sentence back to yourself. Can you prove what you just said you would? Then you’re good to go. Just remember to delete the phrase “In this paper, I will prove, etc.” when you submit your paper.
And finally, remember that I don’t approve term paper topics. By the end of week 1 of this class, you just have to commit to a topic, research it thoroughly, and stick with it.
