Your assignment is to compose an essay at least 4 ½ pages long, following proper MLA
style, which analyzes the themes of race and racism in the story. You will need to begin with a
brief plot summary of the story, and then trace the racial elements in the story. You should also
BRIEFLY discuss the issue of slavery and racism as it occurred during that historical time
period, and how the story fits the perception of race and gender during its time period.
Your ultimate theme or thesis is to argue who you think in the story is to blame for
Desiree’s death and why. For example, is her real or adoptive mother at fault? Is Desiree herself
at fault? Is Armond or his parents at fault? DO NOT SAY EVERYONE IS AT FAULT. Argue
who you think bears the most fault, and support your position with direct evidence (quotes) from
the story and from outside research.
Finally, you may wish to briefly discuss why or why not this type of discrimination is
more or is less likely to occur in modern-day American society. In other words, how has this
issue changed or has it changed? Are people still exposed to discrimination and racism that may
have tragic results?
Your Works Cited page must include a minimum of 5 entries (one will be the citation for
the story itself), and the other 4 required sources must be from the library databases.
For library database sources, PDF files are preferable because they have page numbers
which make them easier to cite. Make sure you use the correct MLA Works Cited entries for
your sources and follow MLA formatting for citations. Your essay should follow all MLA
format manuscript guidelines
the 5th source being used is from an article “desiree’s baby’ i can provide this for you to read
