2. Your reading log should have two paragraphs:
a. Paragraph 1
+ Write a summary of the section in about 150 words. The summary should start with the main idea of the section and the source. Then continue the paragraph with the major supporting details.
Example:
+ In “From the Boundless Deep” (Chapter 1 in Hawaii, paragraphs #1-20), James Michener writes about….
b. Paragraph 2
+ Reread the section or important parts if necessary. Circle and highlight important words, phrases, sentences, and/or parts. Then write a response paragraph in about 200 words on how James Michener makes his description of the Pacific Ocean and island formation in the vast ocean come alive. Consider his techniques in choosing events (details that cast an impression on the reader’s mind), making comparisons, and using figurative language (such as: personification, metaphor, simile) and sensory details that appeal to sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. Cite examples in your response.
3. Include a quote in your response paragraph and use at least six vocabulary words listed below. Put the quote in quotation marks. You can use the four vocabulary words in both of the paragraphs, or just one. Remember to underline the six words. Change the word forms of words to suit your sentences.

4. Add Works Cited at the end of the reading log.
