Research Paper

The art of sourcing and writing a research paper is one of the most valuable skills that you will learn in college. We will work on the first draft of your research paper in stages. The assignment for this first stage is to (1) write an introduction to your paper and to (2) write a draft Works Cited page in MLA style with three research sources.

The specific assignment will be posted on Blackboard this weekend. This information is to give you a heads up as you write your research paper introduction. The information included in your abstract will probably be helpful, but this should be a real introduction with a thesis statement.

Introduction. The introduction should not be too long, but it should include the following elements:
• introducing your topic,
• creating some context and background: in other words, the importance of this topic (your rationale for choosing it), and
• stating your hypothesis (your working thesis statement). This can be a question.

Do not make statements like “This paper will show […]” or “I will be writing about […].” Your hypothesis/draft thesis statement should inform the reader about the purpose of the paper.

Sample Introductions: These examples come from spring 2019 English 112 H students:
The Global Importance of Quality Education
As humans we have come to acknowledge how formative the first years of our lives are. Yet, most people do not realize how influential environments are to the opportunities their children may receive. When humans come to coexist, their location predetermines their education, access to medicine, and possible careers. Location has the ability to determine success or doom. Poverty and education are present global issues that continue to be unresolved, and if addressed properly would help our society prosper tremendously. Unfortunately, extreme poverty in our society both prevents and discourages the pursuit of education for children and adults.

The Effects of Sea Level Rise on Planet Earth
Planet Earth is a complex and fascinating environment which facilitates all aspects of life. Sitting on the beach on a hot day and watching the sunset is one of our most treasured privileges that Mother Nature has granted us. In this symbiotic relationship, the beach provides support and acts as a natural relaxant, while we are expected to reciprocate by preserving it. “I love the beach” is what we all say, but how can we really say that we love something when we fail to protect it? Many things can affect our habitats: oil spills, forest fires, hurricanes, deforestation, and even pollution. However, Sea Level Rising (SLR) is the most devastating consequence of climate change because it negatively impacts our health as well as our entire ecosystem. SLR destroys terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity, affects the tourism industry, and increases floods and health issues in developing countries.
