****RESPOND TO THE COMMENT BELOW REGARDING TIM WISES SPEECH:

“”Tim Wise’s speech “Diversity, Unity, and Student Success” spoke about how the biggest problem is “the Other” and “the Norm.” That is to say, the norm being the dominant culture and the other being the inferior group. There is no interrogating the norm because they do not open up about subjects either than themselves, and they won’t shift their focus. I agree with Wise because he makes a point about the norm having blinders. They do not see discrimination unless it is towards them. He spoke about the Minnesota Nice and believing they’re diverse, but in reality, to the other group, they are behaving in a passive-aggressive way. Being overly nice but discriminative behind closed doors. The norm cannot be questioned about their racism towards the other because they do not see themselves as wrongdoers.

Wise goes on to speak about racial stereotypes and that the norm often believes that Blacks, women, LGBT have an equal opportunity. They’re blinded to the racial injustices and inequity. Wise states, that even children can tell there is inequality. The norm show a consistent “lens” to the truth about racism. Believing that people of color are exaggerating about racism and inequality. White people default to there own understanding. While judges have a “lens” towards White and Black offenders, showing favoritism towards White offenders because they don’t look as aggressive as Black offenders. If the norm removed the blinders and acknowledge their own biases than they can take responsibility for the kind of person they truly are.

Taking the project implicit tests showed me that even I have a lens and that according to the test see Black people as more violent and Whites as more innocent. I honestly think the test itself is biased, and I do not think either one has a violent or innocence. I see all people as equal until they show their true colors. I have a best friend who is White and Filipino, we’ve been friends since we were 18 and now we’re 34. I have seen our friendship flourish and never once questioned if she was a racist.
Wise makes a profound point in his speech and it allows me to see that not all White people are racist.””
