This assignment involves summarizing various readings/studies in the textbook and applying theoretical frameworks from the text portions (front) of the sections to those studies. Choose three (3) readings to review from the following list:

OR

OR

CHOICE #3
Reading 16: Social Disorganization and Homicide in Recife, Brazil – page 308
OR
Reading 21: Peers and Delinquency among Girls and Boys: Are Sex Differences in Delinquency Explained by Peer Factors? – page 387
DO NOT QUOTE the textbook or other sources. I want you to write all of your discussion/info in YOUR OWN WORDS…so paraphrase. Make sure not to quote the text or any other source. Also IMPORTANT, MAKE SURE TO CITE THE PAGES IN THE TEXTBOOK OF THE THEORIES YOU ARE APPLYING TO THE VARIOUS READINGS/STUDIES. You must apply a specific theory from the textbook to each reading you review. And you MUST provide page numbers from the textbook about which theory you are applying to each study. A primary goal of this assignment is to explain the chapter content as if you are actually “teaching” the material to people who know nothing about criminology. Thus, you are expected to provide some depth in your explanations or summaries, and when appropriate, provide your own examples/insight if you can.
ADVICE: Try to be specific in reviewing and summarizing the various readings, especially in terms of concepts, propositions, theorists, etc. that you are applying to each of the studies. I would probably spend at least 2 or 3 pages summarizing a particular reading and right after that spend at least 2 pages applying the theories/concepts you think are relevant to the reading. If you do this, you should have the minimum 15 pages of text (and then other 2 pages are the Title Page and References page to total 17 pages). And assume you are writing each answer as though the reader has NO KNOWLEDGE of criminology; in other words, do not write this paper to me! Rather, write it as if you are writing it for your parents, siblings, friends, etc., who know nothing about our field.
Not required, but I encourage you to provide some extra scientific evidence/articles that counter or support what is covered in the text material, then you will likely get extra points (assuming that all other documentation is given in the text and reference page). Just make sure to cite the original citation for such source material. I strongly encourage such critique (or added support from external sources), but make sure to cite it, or you can lose huge points. And make sure it is peer-reviewed, not just online due to “whatever” or personal blogs and such. On the other hand, such extra documentation is not required to receive a good grade for this assignment. Your personal opinions are sort of “icing on the cake”; not required, but it can’t hurt. Just don’t make this a significant amount of your discussion.
DO NOT QUOTE the text or other materials. You must paraphrase in your own words. If direct quotes are used, I will take off major points.
DON’T USE HEADINGS/SUBHEADINGS EXCESSIVELY; if you do, many points will be deducted!!!! Just use headings to identify the chapters/entries you are summarizing; no more headings are needed because you should be noting the pages you are discussing. Given that there are titles for each entry (note them by title), there is no need for more headings than that; if you do so, I will take off points.
