RHETORICAL ANALYSIS : ENG 219
When writing a rhetorical analysis, you are not so much interested in what is being said, but how that message is being conveyed. For this reason, you pay close attention to language, tone, AND context among other things.
You are now being asked to analyze an argument. You have two choices:
Rhetorically analyze “The Invisible Women of the Civil Rights Movement” OR “The Combahee River Collective Statement” OR the interview of BLM founders
Put TWO of these artifacts into conversation with one another and rhetorically analyze both
Remember to choose the three (or four) techniques for which you can make the strongest case. For example, I might analyze the different use of language in the BLM founders’ interview and “The Combahee River Collective Statement”, as well as tone and motives.
On the other hand, I might analyze the structure, sources and audience of “The Invisible Women of the Civil Rights Movement” .
Rhetoricians employ many techniques; focus on the ones that are the most prevalent or interesting and that you can describe persuasively.
Ex. Thesis In her article “The Invisible Women of the Civil Rights Movement”, Beth Olanoff effectively convinces her readers of the extent of patriarchal practices within the Civil Rights Movement by providing readers with historical context, savvy organization all while employing an academic tone.
