American Literature I: Paper #2 Prompt
In the second half of this semester, we have seen natural imagery, metaphors, and symbolism occurring frequently in American literature from the first half of the 19th century.
In a 3-page formal paper (2-1/2 minimum), examine the role of nature in the works of at least 2 different authors we cover in the second half of the semester (from Emerson in week 9 up to Dickinson in week 15). For example, you could focus on similarities and/or differences in the way nature is used as a metaphor or symbol in different pieces. Or you could analyze the way nature is presented in different works as a way of understanding how different authors thought or felt about nature itself—are they respectful, dismissive, admiring, etc.? As with the first paper, go with what you feel most interested in analyzing about representations of nature in the literature we cover.
Avoid using external sources and writings. The point of this paper is to have you exercise your analytical and argumentative skills using the primary sources (the poems, essays, letters, etc.) you have been reading.
