Task 2 is in Section 14.2 and discusses an international outbreak of one of the approved contagious diseases. An example of a specific outbreak is the 2014 Ohio Amish measles outbreak brought to the state from the Philippines. You are not reporting on a pandemic, but an outbreak which may be part of the pandemic.

The Bentonville simulation completion certificate will be included when submitting

Task 2.

For assistance in task 1 and 2 organization and writing, a task writing guide (template) can be found in the course of study launch page under “course search”.

Below is Additional Task 1 support that I have put together. The information is in alignment with the cohort and task directions/rubric and many students have found the information and examples have assisted them in task navigation.

To complete the areas of Task 1, make sure you have collected the data on the four tools provided. The tools can be found in the COS 6.1 under the link to enter the simulation or in the Assessment section on the course home page, click the View Task link, then go to Task Overview and use the Supporting Documents link. The tools can be found in those two areas under the Community Assessment link (Demographic, Public Safety, and Scavenger Hunt) and the Windshield Survey link. On the Windshield Survey only answer the questions that you can, approximately 50% of the tool.

Section A., of the task is called “action report” in instructions. This “action report” is a collection of the 12 photos assigned in the task directions.

The simulation collects the pictures in a Photo Journal.

You will visit each of the required 12 places that are required — see task 1 directions for list.
Use the camera icon in SC and take a picture at each of the 12 individual sites, per the task directions.
If there is signage make sure to get that in the picture,
In the text box type in the name of the location if there is no signage in the photo.
Once you take the photo it will be saved in a Photo Journal.

Section B., you will need to summarize the information identified on each of the four tools. The tool names need to be identified in the task per the directions so using the task template mentioned above, summarize related tool information under the listed tool heading. You will be providing summarization of the data collected from the simulation tools to complete this area.

You do not have to compare the rates of SC to National numbers. Areas where statistics, data, or non-general information in-text citations will be done. For assistance on APA and in-text citations please contact the Writing Center, contact information is below.

Section B1., in this area your goal is to link health concerns/problems identified from the simulation to data you collected or identified. In other words, what causative factor(s) or information from charts under the tools, spinning “I’s” and/or your observations identify the health concern is a problem recognized from the simulation. Determinants are causes, related risk factors of health-related conditions or situations.

For example, maybe you will identify SC as having a possible health concerns with cardiovascular disease identified from community characteristics and data you identified along with the four assessments (e.g. prevalence of smokers, poverty, low cigarette tax, cultural acceptance, hospital admits/discharges, pharmacy mediations dispensed).

Another example maybe the health concern in SC related to pollution from the data indicated issues in the City Hall Water and Sanitation chart. Related issues to the health concern was observed with trash burning, rats and dogs in the streets, pollution floating, etc.

Analyze the collected data and charts in SC, using concepts of epidemiology and health determinants, identifying 3-4 health concerns from the collected information.

Section B1., is usually a couple paragraphs summary.

Overall, Section C., consists of using 3 of the SC health concerns/problems you identified in B1.

Section C1., In this section you identify your 3 top health problem you assessed for Sentinel City and state the Healthy People 2020 goal that addresses each of the 3 problems. Look on the HP 2020 Topics A-Z website to find the HP topics/goals. See the example below of what the HP 2020 Goal/objective will look like. You will find it under the tab “overview”. This HP 2020 goal/objective is what supports each of the 3 problems you identified.

Click HERE to access the HP2020 topics or find HP2020 access in the task directions under “Web Links”

Basically, you will state something like this (using the screenshot from above):

The first problem identified is a high incidence of poor oral health in Sentinel City. The Healthy People 2020 Goal for addressing oral health is to prevent and control oral and craniofacial diseases, condition, and injuries, and improve access to preventative services and dental care (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2019).

The second identified problem in Sentinel City is XXXX. The HP 2020 goal to address this issue is……(in-text citation).

The third identified problem in Sentinel City is XXXX. The HP 2020 goal to address this issue is…… (in-text citation).

Section C2., you will then choose one of your previously selected 3 problems in C1. In C2., after you have chosen one problem you will then go back on the bus and ride through SC to find resources that address that selected problem or refer to the Scavenger Hunt information.

Section C3., Go to the Primary Prevention Topic List in the task directions, choose one topic from the list that relates to the health concern resources listed in C2. This section can be two sentences…. The Primary Prevention topic I have chosen is …………. This topic was selected as it relates to the resources identified in C2.

Section D., is your conclusion and you are to discuss how you will apply the assessment strategies learned from the simulation environment to assessment strategies in you can utilize in your community. Did this experience make you “think out of the box”, did it provide you with additional assessment skills to serve your clients or to identify resources for them, etc.? It relates to you and your community/work area and not more information on the simulation.

This section is usually a couple of paragraphs.

Below is a brief mock example for Section D. Be sure you use this only as a brief example to understand what could be included:

I have learned from using the assessment strategies and tools how to assess my own community to identify resources and areas requiring support…..etc. I have also learned through assessing a virtual community that critically analyzing data will assist to define problem areas in a community. Strategies that will be affective for me to assess my community include gathering data on various aspects of the community and county such as demographics, available resources for problem areas, and visually assessing my community using a windshield survey.

Below is Additional Task 2 support that I have put together. The information is in alignment with the cohort and task directions/rubric and many students have found the information and examples have assisted them in task navigation.

B. DESCRIPTION OF OUTBREAK.

You need to describe one specific outbreak of a disease selected from the task directions, Section A, list identifying the outbreak from one country to another (from Country A to Country B), including each of the following:

• name of the disease

• the countries involved (link the outbreak from Country A to Country B)

• the date the outbreak was discovered

• the dates the disease reached each involved country

A general example of a specific outbreak is the 2014 Ohio Amish measles outbreak brought to the state from the Philippines. (you can use this too). Once an outbreak is identified you can “Google” or “Google Scholar” to search for the information required in this section, using a reputable source.

B1. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL DETERMINANTS AND RISK FACTORS.

What are epidemiological determinants related to the identified outbreak? A determinant is anything that increases disease frequency in a population.

Analyze the epidemiological determinants of the specific outbreak. What is indicator? Was it related to lack of immunizations, travel outside the US, etc.? Why is it important? What does it tell us? Risk Factors and Transmission are both epidemiological determinants. However, you should discuss other determinants relevant for your outbreak here such as infectivity (how easily spread is it?), virulence (how deadly is it?), mode of transmission (Vector? Contact? Aerosol?), climate considerations (i.e. does the vector survive arid or cold temperatures?), antigenic stability (i.e. Influenza) and any other appropriate variable.

Discuss any RISK FACTORS involved. Risk factors typically address the condition of the host (patient) and environment. Examples of risk factors would be age, occupation, immune-compromised status, unvaccinated status, lack of prior exposure to the disease, smoking, living in close quarters (i.e. military, prisons, and college dormitories), vector exposure, etc.

B2. ROUTE OF TRANSMISSION.

Discuss the national and international ROUTE OF TRANSMISSION of the disease causing the outbreak. Discuss how the disease was spread geographically. Was air travel to blame? Migration? More local travel? Other? And then explain where it went over time.

B3. IMPACT ON COMMUNITY.

This is a hypothetical situation (your thoughts and opinions) of a what would happen at a systems level if the disease outbreak, worst case scenario, occurred in your community. How do you see it affect the community, assume the worst-case scenario (include the functioning of schools, local government, businesses, hospitals)? Including how would an outbreak would affect the economy, schools, healthcare facilities, transportation.

For example, predict the effect of an outbreak on the FUNCTIONING of your city/county. You will want to address additional things like hospital overflow, transportation issues, economic productivity, etc. The evaluator is looking for a “logical discussion” including what would be the effect on schools (would they need to close)? Would government offices need to close, etc.? Would the hospitals have the staff to care for an outbreak? Could they handle the individuals coming to the clinics or put others at risk? Would it burden or overtax the health system of the community, etc.?

B4. REPORTING PROTOCOL.

Explain the REPORTING PROTOCOL if an outbreak of the selected disease were to occur in your community. Often there is state legislation dictating the reporting protocol (chain of command) related of communicable disease. You can “Google” the reporting protocol for your area and should find the chain of command.

This task tip may help, as a community health nurse, who would you report a new case to? What does your Public Health Department, local and state level, indicate for reporting communicable disease? Think about who should be notified and how? As stated above your state legislature should have laws for the reporting of communicable diseases when suspected or actual.

B5. PREVENTION STRATEGIES.

Discuss two strategies (e.g., patient education strategies, community education strategies) that you would recommend preventing an outbreak of the selected disease in your community. Provide a discussion with explanation on how the strategies would prevent an outbreak. Why do you recommend these as prevention strategies?

Perhaps avoiding the vectors, staying home when feeling ill, hand washing, covering mouth and nose when sneezing, information on vaccinations, and /or perhaps wearing a mask. Immunization clinics and/or incorporation of seasonal influenza vaccination movements at different levels, especially those who are at high risk. Does the community have a sufficient supply of anti-viral mediations, what could be used to treat the outbreak? Provide a discussion with explanation on how the strategies would prevent an outbreak. Why do you recommend these as prevention strategies?
