In this assignment you will read a short chapter from the book The Great Warming by Brian Fagan. The chapter explores three groups of people in the southwest during the medieval warming period. The first group are Chumash peoples who lived on the mainland. The second are Chumash people who lived on islands. Finally, the last group are pre-Puebloan people in what is now New Mexico. Each of these is a story about how these people adjusted to increased drought during the medieval warming period.
Note: When I ask for evidence, I do not simply mean citing an argument I make or Fagan makes. Rather, you should prove you understand how we prove it. What historical references are made in order to demonstrate or prove our claims?

After reading the chapter, you will write a short essay. (1) In the first paragraph, I want to you discuss Fagan’s main argument. What is he trying to tell us about these peoples during the great warming? (2) In the second question, I want you to discuss what types of evidence he is using. Please cite specific spots in the reading. If you quote, do not use more than a few words. (3) Finally, in the third paragraph, discuss places were he has to guess because there is a lack of sources. Look for words like “perhaps,” “likely,” “probably,” or “maybe.” To what extent do these gaps matter in his larger argument? Once again use evidence.
