Short Paper #3: geography, opportunity and change
Due Friday, March 5, 2021, 11:59 PM
Time remaining: 9 days 5 hours
Suburbanization and gentrification are two concepts that reflect part of American ideology, the concept known as “The American Dream.” They are concepts that describe housing patterns and neighborhood development as well as concepts that evoke images of success, failure, and, arguably, reflect the American opportunity structure. On the other hand, the fact that most of the nation’s poor are now living in the suburbs, that gentrification reduces the amount of affordable housing available in urban areas, and that residential segregation is a normative pattern in American society are issues not widely discussed. Sociologists argue that these social patterns are related phenomena.
Assignment: After reading chapter 15 in Ferris & Stein (2020) write a short paper in which you address each of the following issues and questions.
· Identify and discuss three (3) different factors that contribute to current trends in suburbanization, gentrification, and residential segregation in American society today. (At least one social factor must be structural.)
· Which factors do you find most significant and which most difficult to change?
· Do these factors apply to everyone in society or just certain groups or specific geographic regions?
· Draw on at least two theories you learned this semester as well as information from academic/peer reviewed resources to develop an explanation for this emergent trend.
For this assignment you must cite your information sources and draw on at least two (2) scholarly sources, in addition to your textbook.
