Current situation:
Baptist Hospital of Miami reports an increase in nurse shortage during the pandemic due to staff burnout and pandemic fatigue. In addition, many ICU and Med-Surg nurses have left Baptist to go work for the travel agencies because of the high pay they offer.
Baptist of Miami has a float system that allows nurses to rotate where they’re most needed, so they’re not necessarily treating the sickest COVID patients daily. It’s something that helps with burnout.
Baptist hired 100 new nurses and also hired travel nurses to help ease the load of the surge. But as the contract with travel agencies finishes, patient-nurse ratio has increased in Baptist Hospital, contributing to staff burnout.
