Stakeholder Proposal

Overview: Academic argument is a necessary skill for college and beyond. Similar to the arguments you engage in with family or friends, academic arguments are embedded in a rhetorical situation that influences the argument itself and the way in which readers will respond to it. In this unit you’ll explore how the rhetorical situation influences argument and then you’ll use that knowledge to inform your own work. You will engage in academic research of a pressing issue within the theme of health and well-being, ask questions through research and seek multiple perspectives, and lastly you’ll create your own contribution to the conversation through your own unique claim.

Purpose: Your goal for this assignment will be to convince your audience to accept your claim. To do this you will need to think carefully about the argument you make, what research you use to support that argument, the audience to whom you’ll write, and how you will appeal to that audience.

Audience: The audience for this essay is a stakeholder group of your choice based on your research. As a stakeholder, your audience will have a vested interest in the issue and must therefore all be a logical choice for directing your claim.

Genre: Your genre will be a 1500-1800 word (6-7 pages) MLA-style, thesis-driven, research-based argumentative essay, plus a Works Cited page (note: the Works Cited page does not count toward the word count requirement).

Requirements:

Write a 1500-1800 word (6-7 page) thesis-driven argument supported by logical reasons and credible evidence. You may go 10% over the maximum word limit without it impacting your grade.
Direct your argument to a stakeholder group who is capable of achieving the purpose of your argument. Demonstrate awareness of your audience through appropriate appeals.
Support your reasons with credible and relevant evidence directed to your intended audience. You will need to include at least 4 sources, both popular and scholarly, that offer varying perspectives and are synthesized appropriately.
Address at least one established audience concern or objection.
Paraphrase, quote, and explain source material appropriately for your specific audience.
Include a Works Cited page at the end with full citations for all sources, along with corresponding in-text citations within the body of the paper.
Follow MLA paper format: typed and double-spaced, using Times New Roman, 12-pt font; last name and page number in the upper right-hand corner of each page; one-inch margins; include a formal MLA heading consisting of your name, my name, the course, and the due date for the assignment.
Review the A2 Rubric for specific grading criteria and pay attention in class for instruction on how to meet that criteria successfully.
Include the CSU Honor Pledge at the top of the first page: “I have not given, received, or used any unauthorized assistance on my writing project.”
