The essay is to be structured as follows:
Introduction: (~1 pg)
Getting Democracy (~3 pgs): Begin the substantive portion of the essay by describing your chosen country’s most recent attainment of democracy (prior to the regression you’ll be describing in the next section). What were the key factors that led to this shift? What are the indicators that highlight the shift? For this latter question, turn to Freedom House or other metrics of democracy to make your case. Last, discuss how modernization theory is represented through this country’s transition?
Losing/Diminishing Democracy (~4 pgs): In this section, you will first describe how the country’s democracy regressed (similarly referencing indicators that highlight the shift). Was it sudden or prolonged? Who were the key actors and events? Next, highlight the ways in which this country’s pathway follows the model laid out by Ziblatt and Levitsky (reading attached). Also, reference how polarization and populism have manifested themselves during this country’s regression where applicable.
Lessons for the US & Conclusion (~2 pgs): Your final section should underscore your essay’s key points, like any other concluding section, but will also highlight any lessons for democratic maintenance in the United States (i.e., how does this case serve as a cautionary tale for America?).
You will need to use at least five sources outside the course material. They can be a mix of academic and journalistic, but don’t skew towards the latter.
