In this section, the student must discuss the evolution of the theory, the theorist who founded the theory, and identify key concepts of the theory.

We want to know a little bit about the theorist themselves and what were their assumptions or key concepts of the theory? For example, you may want to talk about how Florence Nightingale served as a nurse in the Crimean War and that she observed patients dying due to sanitation and environmental concerns, it was from these observations that Nightingale’s Environmental Theory was birthed. The principles of this particular have helped shape best and safe practices, such as handwashing and infection control. This theory focuses on concepts related to the patient environment to include air, water, cleanliness, sanitation, sunlight, etc.
Discuss why this theory was chosen and how it relates to clinical practice in general and the evidenced based outcomes that you are seeking to achieve using this theory later in the paper.

Tell the reader specifically how it will be used in practice (this is referring to section 6 of the rubric). This section will include the description, elements of the theory, Theoretical Assumptions, logical adequacy, generalizability, parsimony, and testability of the theory selected.
In this section you will need to describe the theory to the reader:
Did you find any information about what prompted the creation of the theory?
Was the theory derived deductively (from more of a general law) or inductively (derived from data)?
What are the elements of the theory?
Did the author state the theoretical assumptions of the theory? If not, you may have to pull these from the context of your readings regarding the theory. For example, assumptions about Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Theory might be that nursing is an art and a science, and that optimal nursing outcomes can only be achieved through altering the patient environment.
Considerations in determining the Logical Adequacy of a theory: Determining logical adequacy is quite complex so for this assignment you just need to focus on the following questions to determine if your theory is logically adequate: Is there a system in which predictions can be made from the theory that are independent of its concepts? Are scientists in the field able to come to agreement on the predictions? Does the actual content make sense? Are there any obvious logical fallacies?
Considerations in determining Generalizability: How widely the theory can be used in explaining or predicting phenomena reflects the criterion of generalizability? The wider the focus of the theory, the more generalizable it is likely to be. The more broadly it can be applied, the more generalizable it is.
Considerations when determining Parsimony of a theory: Refers to how simply and briefly a theory can be stated without sacrificing the theory’s content, structure, or completeness. Theories that cannot be reduced to say a mathematical model should be examined to see if the formulations are as clear and as brief as they can be.
Considerations when determining Testability: Hypotheses can be generated from the theory, research carried out, and the theory supported by evidence or modified because of it. A theory that has strong empirical evidence to support it is a stronger theory than the one that does not have validated evidence.
