For this participation assignment, you will choose two any two of the texts from the list below, and will create and argue your own thesis that compares these texts.
Texts:
Audre Lorde, “Poetry is Not a Luxury” (1977)
Paule Marshall, “From the Poets in the Kitchen” (1983)
Toni Morrison, “Peril” (2019)
Your participation assignment MUST begin with a thesis claim, which must put the two texts in conversation with each other, through comparison or contrast. For an example of this, look at the thesis provided for the unit 2 essay, which identifies a shared theme and then goes on to make explicit the different ways in which each author sees that theme playing out:
“James Baldwin’s “The Creative Process” (1962) and Audre Lorde’s “Poetry is Not a Luxury” (1977) both show the importance of looking inwardly as a necessary first step to effecting change. Baldwin, however, more heavily emphasizes this process as one that should ultimately extend outward to benefit society, while Lorde presents it as a more personal, spiritual undertaking.”
To paraphrase this thesis, both authors emphasize looking inward to make change (shared) BUT have different ideas about what’s important about the process (benefiting society vs. personal/spiritual growth).
Your participation assignment MUST use specific evidence from both of your chosen texts to prove your thesis, and must not use any other sources.
Your participation assignment MUST include at least one direct quotation from each of your chosen texts. No single quotation may be longer than 4 lines.
Your participation assignment MUST be at least 500 words.
Your participation assignment MUST include MLA style in-text citations and a works cited section. Any material not properly cited is plagiarized: the assignment will receive a 0 and will be reported to the college.
