Typically, using “I” in writing can give an informal tone to whatever is being conveyed. In this case, I think Tim O’Brien wanted the reader to know the findings hes speaks of were of his own opinion and knowledge. For this purpose, I do not think it’s counterproductive to use the subjective “I” due to the fact that it gives credit to the author. He gives very specific exmaples throughout the narrative which emphasize the research he himself did. As a professor, I think it’s dependant upon the narrative that is being written. In this case, I would appreciate the use of “I” because of what the author is telling us and explaining throughout his writing.
