Tone,Style, and Diction

PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS PEER POST
In The Lottery the author’s tone was very calm and descriptive in the beginning of the story. I was ready for a happy story of some deserving family winning the lotto. “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green.”
I would characterize the author’s writing style as very detailed of the village people’s nonchalant attitudes “clean forgot what day it was.” Mrs. Hutchinson was joking and very cheerful until her family was picked in the lottery. I was not expecting this out come from the story. The way the author described the characters as if it was another normal day in the town.
The words I felt powerful was the author’s description of Mr. Summers wife. I found “his wife was a scold” to be very descriptive. I felt referring to is wife in such a way was interesting, made me think why the author would be that detailed.
The tone of “The Lottery” was very bright in the beginning of the story. I did not expect it to end so dark. I was thinking this was going to be a story of happiness by the way the story begin. Reading this story definitely heightens my appreciation for authors. Shirley Jackson’s writing gave the impression in the beginning of the story as if it was going to be a happy and exciting.
