This week for our discussion board we have been asked to explain and provide example of the different types of crime patterns that are associated with crime analysis. It is very obvious reality that crime is more often than not concentrated along more than one dimension. There are small exceptions to this fact, such as crimes against the same target at the same location that occurs shortly after a previous crime is committed by the same offender using the same tactics and tools(Farrell, 2015). But most of the time, this is not the case. For crime situations that involve a little more depth to the investigation, crime analysts must categories the crimes by the patterns that they entail. The ways in which crime analysts use to determine how to do so has many deciding factors. By the use of deduction and induction methods a crime analysis can place crimes in the proper categories. For instance, the deduction method is used by the crime analyst when there is a large number of cases from which to determine a pattern. The induction method, on the other hand, occurs when the crime analyst has only one case to which others can therefore be linked. The following paragraph includes a list of the different types of crime patterns that a crime analyst can categorize crimes into.
Series crime patterns involve a stretch of similar crimes being committed by the same offender or offenders against one or many targets and victims. The level of environmental consistency (offenders’ choice of crime scene selection as well as the location of crime scene) is often examined for these types of patterns (Deslauriers-Varin, 2014).
Spree crime patterns are patterns that are characterized by the high level of frequencies of criminal activities. These patterns can seem almost continuous.
Repeat victim crime patterns are characterized by individuals that share similar victimized characteristics and specific individuals who have repetitively been victimized over a short period of time.
Repeat offender crime patterns involve specific groups of individuals or individuals themselves who have been repeatedly offended over the course of a short amount of time.
Hot spots are specific locations or small areas we’re an abnormal amount of criminal activity occurs regularly. These crimes can be committed by one or more offenders.
Hot targets are categorized as being a type of place that victimization frequently occurs but the actual locations of these places are not necessarily in the same area.
Hot products can be categorized as a certain category of property that is the target in the same type of crimes or even different types of crimes.
I also feel that spatial crime patterns can be added to this list. Spatial crime patterns are patterns that focus on the potential locations of people at any given time of the day and considers the presence of these people in the three key ingredients associated with the routine activity theory (Hipp, 2016). 1. A motivated offender 2. A suitable target 3. The absence of a capable guardian.
