Week 9: Arrest, Trial, Death, and Resurrection
This week, we’ll focus on Jesus’s last days.
We continue on with Jesus’s last days. Again, pay attention to the chronology. Think critically
about the dialogue and events. What witnesses would have been able to or have an interest in
preserving and sharing what was supposedly said or done, especially in private legal
proceedings? Is it plausible that any of the words and events were preserved? Or must they
necessarily have been invented later for the oral and written traditions?
Do all of the following:
Read the excerpts from the texts that I identify below.
Note the following while reading:
“scriptures” in 1 Corinthians refers to books of the Hebrew Bible
Matthew 27:28-29: “Akanthon” is the Greek word that is translated as thorns. However, “akanthon” is also the plural form for acanthus leaves. Given that acanthus grows in that area, the crown was likely of those leaves rather than of thorns. So the leafy crown was to mock Jesus in the story as the “King of the Jew”, rather than to torture him with thorns.
The Greek word “lestes” gets translated as “bandit.” The word refers more specifically to peasants who’d been driven off their land and then, yes, committed crimes to survive, but there’s also the connotation of being rebels against the wealthy landowners.
1 Cor 11:23-25; 15:3-8
Acts 1; 3
Mark 14-16 ( The earliest manuscripts of Mark’s gospel end at 16:8. The remaining text found in most translations were added in later manuscripts.)
Matt 26-28
Luke 22-24
John 11:55-57; 13-21
