think mentors play an important role in guiding other nurses. To be honest when I first became a new nurse, I did not have a mentor and at the time it made me think about leaving the nursing profession. As a new graduate nurse, I started off in a pediatric ICU unit. My co-workers at the time were not supportive of new nurse and were unwilling to help me out. This was already a stressful unit and not having the support or help from my co-workers added to my stress. I would leave work every day crying and I would be stressed to go to work every day. I hit a point where I couldn’t do it anymore and I thought about leaving nursing all together, but I decided to get a job elsewhere and try it again. “Nurses reported that having the emotional support of their mentors, made them feel as if they were accepted into the work group and helped them manage their negative feelings of frustration and uncertainty” (Gazaway, Gibson, Schumacher, & Anderson, 2019). I am positive if I had a mentor, I would have stayed in that position longer then I did. “Studies have been conducted on mentoring and nursing faculty, demonstrating that mentoring positively impacts career and psychosocial functions” (Gwyn, 2011). I have used this experience when I became an experience nurse to help new nurses.
When I became a new RN supervisor, I had someone who became a mentor to me. When I got this position right away so jumped in to train me. Still to this day she is always checking in with me and giving me help and advice. This person is enthusiastic and enjoys the role of helping others. I would describe this person as a transformational leader.

The most memorable mentor I had was a cardiac ACU Nurse although she was not much older she had started in nursing long before I did. I really admired her because she had a reputation, as a no non sense expert cardiac nurse and that was exactly what I wanted to become, yet at the same time she had a pretty smile and kindness toward patients and staff that was infectious. I was determined to gain as much knowledge as I possibly could from her. Not only was she willing to take me under her wing, she taught me a lot of her expert procedures for instance, ABG’s, 18 gauge IV insertion on fluid volume overloaded CHF patients and code blue med nurse duties. I was fortunate enough to get hired into a three month resident nurse program and it was a strong one! The hospital provided Cardiac ACU training, EKG interpretation and IV insertion classes all provided by hospital experts. Once, we had undergone these courses we were sent back to our respective units and shifts where the floor nurses taught us the floor routine. To this day I remember every little trick she taught me, she taught me to stand up for what I believed in and to stand up for other nurses when warranted. I have since trained and mentored my fair share of nurses and I always try to remember how patient and positive she was toward my learning and succeeding. She taught me my success was a reflection of her ability to teach and mentor and I really wanted to meet her expectations.
Mentoring programs, similar to the nurse residency program, I was privileged to early in my nursing career, am invaluable because Gruber-Page (2016) they provide knowledge, skills, and guided learning experience for new nurses and keeps older nurses at the top of their game. Powerful mentors are knowledgeable, kind, flexible, and determined. Additionally, they identify and adapt to the individuals’ learning preferences of their mentees at the same time they are generous at sharing their expertise, time, and insight. Expert mentors motivate and challenge mentees to verbalize new ideas and ways of accomplishing tasks. Mentors teach their protégé to be observant and make thoughtful decisions.
