You are going to research a historical event where bodies were involved in protest (examples to be provided in class). Try to avoid something you have personally participated in as I do want this to be an observational perspective.
You will:
(1) narrate as an observer an event (600 words). You will pick the position of one person within that event and this is highly flexible but it will be your observations of the event. You will need to create a very rich description of your topic with an emphasis on the movement (ie. dancing) or the movement of bodies (such as in a protest) and also evaluate the significance of the event that you have chosen. This is not an essay, it is a narrative. Be selective with your words, too, as 600 words is short!
(2) find two (2) sources to support the above assignment. One (1) must be a scholarly source from a peer-reviewed journal (I will show you how to find these) and one (1) must be a video or a first-hand account. For example, a first-hand account could be an interview (audio, written, or video), a medical account (such as in the case of the dancing plague in certain events), an autobiography, a newspaper article describing the events, someone’s video talking about participating, etc.
(3) Answer the following questions: what difficulties did you have in writing the assignment from an outsider perspective? What biases did you find yourself falling into when writing about a protest? What has this event taught you about the role of the body in protest?
